Wohlert glass pendant light – designed by Vilhelm Wohlert

The Wohlert pendant light is characterised by an almost spherical lampshade made of matt, white, handblown glass. The lampshade is open at the bottom and directs the light mainly downwards. However, a soft glow also filters through the glass surface all around. The ideal light for creating mood lighting with an atmospheric character. Wohlert is suitable for both general and targeted area lighting, such as over a table. The suspension height can only be adjusted during installation. The suspension rod is made of brushed steel and reinforces the modern look.

The creative mind behind this timelessly beautiful luminaire design was Vilhelm Wohlert (1920–2007). He completed his architectural training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1944. One chapter of his professional life was his tenure as a professor (1968–1986) at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He also served as deputy director there from 1968 to 1971. From 1951 to 1953, he held a visiting professorship at the University of California, Berkeley, in the USA.

Wohlert’s designs included the Louisiana Museum of Art. Alongside his work as an architect, he collaborated with the Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen to design a range of lights, including – together with Eleni Birkner – the Magnum light in 1995, the Magasin ceiling light (1974), the Micro light (1991) and the Satellit pendant light (1959). Wohlert was honoured for his creative work with, amongst other awards, the Gold Medal in 1949 and the C. F. Hansen Medal from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1979.

The Wohlert pendant light is manufactured by the Danish company Louis Poulsen, which – beginning with Poul Henningsen’s three-shade system in 1925/26 – has always followed the guiding principle of ‘giving form to light’. The aim is to create an ambience that allows people and spaces to shine in the right light.
